when it stops working

why your weight loss stalled

A weight loss plateau usually has one of three causes: you are eating more than you think, your body is burning less than it used to, or the scale is measuring water rather than fat. All three are normal, none of them means your metabolism is broken, and they call for different responses. This article is general wellness information, not medical advice.

The frustrating part is that plateaus arrive on a schedule. Across controlled diet trials, weight loss typically slows around the six-month mark regardless of which diet people were assigned, which tells you the stall is a feature of the process rather than evidence that you picked the wrong plan. Knowing which of the three is happening to you is most of the work.

is my metabolism broken?

Almost certainly not, though something real does happen. As you lose weight, you burn fewer calories simply because there is less of you to carry, and on top of that your body becomes somewhat more efficient than the size change alone predicts. That extra efficiency is called metabolic adaptation, and it has been measured directly, most strikingly in follow-up of Biggest Loser contestants, whose resting energy expenditure remained below prediction years later.

But adaptation of that magnitude followed an extreme intervention, and it is not the usual explanation for a four-week stall. For most people the adaptation is modest and gradual, on the order of a few hundred calories, and it does not stop weight loss outright. It narrows the gap. That is why plateaus tend to appear after months rather than weeks, and why they respond to adjustment rather than to abandoning the effort.

am i eating more than i think?

This is the most common cause and the least comfortable one, so it is worth stating without blame: everybody underestimates, and the size of the error is large. When researchers measured actual intake against what people reported, subjects who were certain they ate about a thousand calories a day were consuming closer to two thousand, and the same study found they overestimated their exercise. These were not people being dishonest. Memory is simply not a measuring instrument.

What usually happens over months is drift, not collapse. Portions grow slightly, the untracked handfuls return, weekends loosen, the oil in the pan stops being counted. Each is trivial and the sum is not. This is also the cause with the most direct fix, because it is the one that shows up immediately when you go back to an accurate record for a couple of weeks.

how long should a plateau last before i change something?

Give it two to three weeks before concluding anything. Daily weight moves several pounds on water alone, driven by sodium, carbohydrate intake, menstrual cycle, and a hard workout the day before, and any of those can mask real fat loss for a fortnight. Weighing more often and reading the trend rather than the number is more informative than weighing less often.

If the trend is genuinely flat across three weeks while your record shows you are in a deficit, then it is time to change an input. If the trend is flat and your record is patchy, the record is the thing to fix first. There is no point adjusting a plan you cannot currently measure.

what should i change first?

Protein and resistance training, before cutting calories further. Preserving muscle protects the part of your metabolism you can still influence, and higher protein intakes during weight loss improve satiety and body composition. Cutting harder is the intuitive move and often the wrong one, because it deepens both the adaptation and the hunger that ends the attempt.

After that, add movement that is not exercise. Non-exercise activity, ordinary walking and standing and moving about, falls quietly as people lose weight and is easy to restore deliberately. And check sleep: short sleep raises hunger hormones and undermines adherence, which makes every other change harder to sustain.

should i take a diet break?

Often, yes. Eating at maintenance for a week or two does not undo your progress, and it gives both appetite and adherence a chance to recover before the next push. Plateaus frequently end not because metabolism recovered but because the person got a rest and then ran a tighter deficit again with the hunger dialed down.

The version that fails is the unplanned break that never ends. The difference between a diet break and quitting is that a break has a return date and a record running through it, so you can see exactly what maintenance actually costs you in calories. That number is worth knowing anyway, because maintenance is where you will spend the rest of your life.

what if i am stalled on a glp-1?

Stalls happen on medication too, and for overlapping reasons: appetite suppression is strongest early and eases somewhat, intake creeps back as nausea fades, and the same water and adaptation dynamics apply. It is also normal for weight loss to slow as you approach the response your dose can produce. Dose questions belong to your prescriber, not to an article.

What is inside your control is the same list as everyone else's: protein, resistance training, movement, sleep, and an honest record. Those are also the things that decide what happens after the medication, since a year after stopping semaglutide participants had regained about two thirds of the weight they had lost. A plateau is an uncomfortable moment to start building them, and a very good one.

common questions

how long does a weight loss plateau last?
Usually two to four weeks if it is water or ordinary fluctuation. If the trend is genuinely flat for more than three weeks while your record shows a deficit, treat it as a real plateau and change an input rather than waiting longer.
why am i not losing weight in a calorie deficit?
The most common answer is that the deficit is smaller than it appears, because intake is underestimated and activity overestimated. The next most common is water retention masking fat loss. Genuine metabolic adaptation is real but usually modest and gradual.
does metabolism slow down permanently after weight loss?
Some adaptation persists, and it has been measured years later after extreme weight loss. For most people the effect is a few hundred calories rather than a metabolism that has stopped working, and resistance training and adequate protein blunt it.
should i eat less to break a plateau?
Not first. Raise protein, add resistance training, restore everyday movement, and fix sleep before cutting further, because deeper cuts increase both adaptation and the hunger that usually ends the attempt.
is a plateau a sign i should stop?
No. Weight loss slows around six months in controlled trials regardless of the diet used, so a stall is a normal stage of the process rather than evidence the approach failed.

a plateau is usually drift, water, or modest adaptation, in that order. fix the record first, then protein and resistance training, and only then touch calories.
